task #2:  Casts and molds

Before you can be assigned to your first dig, you must first show that you are ready to handle the fossils or artifacts that you find and will be able to bring them back to your lab for continued study.  Both archaeologists and paleontologists often make casts and molds of their findings so that the artifacts and fossils can be protected while transporting and so that they can be replicated for further hands on examination.

1.    For this task you will partner with a group of three other scientists in your chosen field of study.  Review the            following websites depending on your trade.
Paleontologists:  How do fossils form?

Archaeologists:  How does the past get buried?

2.    You must collaborate with your team and use the provided resources to learn more about the process of making        casts and molds and why it is important.  Watch the following video to see how fossils are formed and then how        to make a fossil.

3.    If you need more information than the video, please investigate these two sites for written step-by-step                    instructions how to make casts and molds.

4.    When you are ready, prepare your fossils for transport and further study and create your cast and mold with            your group!  (Ask your teacher before starting!)
